Depressing characters, adult relationships and serious themes were fine but I wanted them in more literary work. I think if I’d tried to read Gateway when it first came out, as a teenager, it would have turned me off very hard-I generally preferred likeable protagonists and more upbeat settings when I was reading speculative fiction at that point. I picked it up at the London branch of Forbidden Planet, which was pretty much a weekly destination for me while I was working on my dissertation. Unusually, it’s a book that my partner also liked-she’s not a huge fan of speculative fiction generally. Gateway is a book that I remember grabbing me very hard on first read, when I was in graduate school, so quite a few years after it was originally published. A short re-read here while I work on some more ambitious re-reads in coming weeks (Raymond Chandler and Fanon’s “On Violence” among them.) You had to be Christian to stay in the country. Here is a quick description and cover image of book A Harvest Passion written by Emily E.K. Brief Summary of Book: A Harvest Passion by Emily E.K. The craving for literature, culture and historical knowledge and context throughout the series is very alluring and realistic. What I enjoyed in particular was the writing – it was very evocative and poetic. Overall, I really enjoyed the series, it was not very Hunger Games-y which I generally fear when I read YA dystopias. Anyway, here is a snapshot review of the series. I read this series a little while ago but had a hard time figuring out where I could place it in terms of our monthly themes and weekly spots. Friedman covers the period from about 1994 to 2000, and most of the action takes place at a fortified border emplacement, nicknamed the Pumpkin, meant to prevent guerrilla incursions from southern Lebanon. The narrative is reminiscent of novels by Denis Johnson and Robert Stone, linking combat’s violent absurdity to the traumatized perspectives of individual participants. In this limber, deceptively sparse take on the Middle East’s tightening spiral of violence, Friedman ( The Aleppo Codex: A True Story of Obsession, Faith, and the Pursuit of an Ancient Bible, 2012) combines military history and personal experience on and off the line in deft, observant prose. Powerful account of youthful Israelis maturing, fighting, and dying at a forgotten Lebanon outpost. Corey, recovering from three bullet wounds suffered six months earlier is sitting on his uncle’s porch convalescing peering out into the Long Island Sound. The center becomes a focal point for a murder investigation involving New York police detective, John Corey. The title of the book was the location and name of an animal disease center research facility on the tip of Long Island. While perusing my bookshelves I noticed that there were three John Corey novels that I had never read so I immediately took the plunge and opened PLUM ISLAND.Īfter the recent Ebola crisis in Africa that resulted in a few cases of the disease in the United States my choice of PLUM ISLAND was rather timely. After reading an interview with Greg Iles, who mentioned that DeMille was one of his favorite writers, I decided to revisit his work.
